First Clark International Marathon Philippines a Success despite the Bad Weather
First Clark International Men's Marathon Winner Kariuki Hillary Kiplem & runners-up
Clark Freeport 01-13-08 – its 4:30 am, on a wet, cool January morning along the beautiful, tree-lined Stotsenberg Parade Grounds. The people are beginning to drizzle-in for the First Annual Clark International Marathon held in the clean-air greenery of Clark Zone, Pampanga.
The air is filled, not only with a moist, blissful, breeze, but with anxiety and excitement as the racers are about to challenge themselves to 5k, 10k and a superhuman feat, continuously racing a distance of 42 kilometers. Eyes are barley open at this hour normally reserved for bats and barn-house owls.
Over 2000 participants made the trip to Clark Freeport for this premier, running event. The organizers are pleased, realizing the run is truly one of international scope with world-class runners from Kenya and Singapore competing. The Kenyan runners preparing for this grueling event are George Mwaura Kariuki, Hillary Kiplem Boi Lagat, Wilson Kipkemboi Songok, and Philip Kipkemei Ronoh, the Singaporean runner is Ngoh Shi Kai Lloyd.
First Clark International Women's Marathon Winner Jho-An Banayag & runners-up
Enticing these professional athletes was P1.8million in cash prizes with competition held in the categories: 42K, 10k, and 5k and further separated into men’s and woman’s divisions. P300,000 went to the first place winners in the men's and women's 42K marathon categories. There was even a category for older runners and for the Clark locators, business employees and owners.
Of the 2000 or so participants, most of the athletes appeared to be from the Philippines, everyone had their eyes on the Kenyans as they traveled a long distance and they knew runners from this country are legendary marathon winners competing on the world marathon circuit. We noticed a large contingency of military participants; undoubtedly our military people can boast of being some of the most fit around and with great stamina. CLARK INTERNATIONAL MARATHON TIMES AND RACE RESULTS BY CATEGORY
WOMENS 42K CLARK MARATHON RESULTS
Filipina and long-time local marathon champion Jho-An Banayag won the women’s 42k marathon with an official time of 3:02:5. Cristabel Martes, 28, finished the race in second place with an official time of 3:07:36; and Flordeliza Carreon, finishing third, completed the race in 3:10:12.
MENS 42K CLARK MARATHON RESULTS
Kariuki Hillary Kiplem from Kenya won the men’s 42k marathon with an official time of 2:26:29, pulling away from the Filipino runner Cresenciano Sabal at the very last part of the race, ending-up only 19 seconds behind the Kenyan with an official time of 2:26:48. Third place was had by another member of the Philippine team, 24-year-old Juniel Languido, finishing the race at 2:29:05.
FEMALE 10K RESULTS
27-year-old Mercedita Manipol won the race at 36:36 with 21-year-old Maricel Maquilan finishing second at 39:08, while 26-year-old Liza Yambao placed third at 40:35.
MALE 10K RESULTS
20-year-old Philip Ronoh of Kenya with an official time of 31:57; 28-year-old Rene Herrera was second with an official time of 32:03; 23-year-old Johnny Espana finished third with an official time of 32:39.
FEMALE 5K RESULTS
Winning was 22-year-old Bernadette Mag-aso, followed by 22-year-old Emma Magango for second place, while 25-year-old Nhe-Ann Barcena finished third.
MALE 5K RESULTS
22-year-old Nelbert Ducusin won the race and 22-year-old Ben Alejandrino placed second with 22-year-old Gerald Sabal coming-in third place.
