Originally a steamship company called Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg, the company was first established in 1904 in the town of Svendborg, Denmark by A.P. Moller and his father Peter Maersk Moller. The father/son team raised enough money to purchase a second-hand steamer in 1904 named the Svendborg. Building their first shipyard in 1918, and then acquiring the Odense Steel Shipyard on the Island of Funen. This fulfilled the desire of A.P. Moller to combine shipping with shipbuilding, supplying their own vessels for their services. In 1918 Maersk was in its infancy but on its way to major worldwide dominance in the shipping industry.
